About Shenandoah University

Shenandoah University is a private university located in Winchester, which is an independent city situated in the northwestern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA, with a population that exceeds 23 500 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census.

The university was established in 1875 and was founded by Dr. Abraham Funkhouser and Professor Jay Fries, first starting as Shenandoah Seminary, in Dayton, VA, being moved to its present location, in 1960, 31 years later achieving university status and adopting its current name.

Today, Shenandoah University offers its students 43 undergraduate degrees and 25 graduate degrees, including undergraduate and graduate certificated in many areas.

Athletics

Shenandoah's athletic teams are nicknamed The Hornets and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are red and blue.
